Introduces the regulations governing pole lines, mainly ESA Regulation 22/04 and CSA Guidelines. We survey the components of the overhead system, analyze the forces on poles and talk about grades of construction and load factors, followed by a detailed study of sags, tensions, clearances and the guying of poles. Finally, we cover the software options available for these calculations.

Sags and Tensions in an Overhead Distribution System

We discuss sag, how it relates to tension and the factors that influence both. We then introduce formulas to calculate sags and tensions. The module also covers the vertical clearances required between conductors and other circuits, structures and rail lines. Finally, we address the effect of conductor swing on horizontal clearances.

Guying of Overhead Distribution Circuits

After a graphic illustration of the need for proper guying, we review the various components of a guying system including the wire, insulators, anchors, and how soil classification impacts holding strength. We work through detailed guying calculations, and look at the how software is used in these calculations.
